PATIENCE that endures (forbearance) = not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting. The capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset; endurance. The Greek word for patience is taken from a verb that means “ever tapping” or “never quitting.”
Have you ever tried TAPPING into patience?
But what do we do? How do we practice patience? How do we make it a reality? What do we do about the part of us that is screaming like a toddler… “But I don’t want to be patient! I want it now!”
Two steps: 1. Acknowledge that this part of you exists. Just saying, “Yup, I’m not being patient…” can be enough to trigger change. 2. Tap to release those anxious feelings.
Nick Ortner, The Tapping Solution
I would encourage you to give it a try! Tapping is a simple, yet powerful technique to boost emotional health.
Pariksaha (Sanskrit) = patience and forbearance
“With tender humility and quiet patience, always demonstrate gentleness and generous love toward one another, especially toward those who may try your patience.” Ephesians 4:2 The Passion Translation
“A wise person demonstrates patience, for mercy means holding your tongue. When you are insulted, be quick to forgive and forget it, for you are virtuous when you overlook an offense.” Proverbs 19:11 The Passion Translation
“And patient endurance will refine our character; and proven character leads us back to hope.” Romans 5:4 The Passion Translation
I pause, breathe, and then respond.
I am patient with myself and others.
I accept delay, trouble or suffering without getting angry or upset.
Patient endurance refines my character.
OPENING MEDITATION
Think of a time you experienced complete PATIENCE.
It may be a recent happening, or from the past.
Picture it clearly in your heart and mind.
Feel all the emotions.
What sensations do you feel in the body?
Where do you feel these sensations?
Label your emotions with one word.
Label the sensations felt with one word.
Tuck these words deep into your memory account of PATIENCE.
CLOSING MEDITATION
“Wait quietly in my presence while My thoughts form silently in the depths of your being. Do not rush this process, because hurry keeps your heart earthbound. I am the Creator of the entire universe, yet I choose to make my humble home in your heart. It is there where you know me most intimately; it is there where I speak to you in holy whispers. Ask My Spirit to quiet your mind so that you can hear my still small voice within you. I am speaking to you continually. . . words of PATIENCE. Tune your heart to receive these messages of abundant blessing. Lay your requests before Me, and wait in expectation.”
(Adapted from Jesus Calling, September 21, by Sarah Young)
“And I pray that he would unveil within you the unlimited riches of his glory and favor until supernatural strength floods your innermost being with his divine might and explosive power. Then, by constantly using your faith, the life of Christ will be released deep inside you, and the resting place of his love will become the very source and root of your life.” Ephesians 3:16-17, The Passion Translation
